Proposing on the Isle of Skye?

Did you know? I also photograph proposals on the Isle of Skye! With a slightly different hat on, and working for Isle of Skye Proposals with my good friend and fellow photographer, Rosie Woodhouse, I’d love to be there when you say “YES”!
The Isle of Skye, with its beautiful landscapes, has become an increasingly popular destination for couples seeking a magical location for their proposal. I’ve had the pleasure of capturing many such moments here on the Island. Here are my top tips to help you plan the perfect proposal on the Isle of Skye.
Choose the Perfect Location
- The Quiraing: With its dramatic landscapes and sweeping views, the Quiraing offers a rugged yet romantic setting.
- Sligachan: This is an easy to find spot on the island and is on the way to just about anywhere. The has the Cuillin mountains as a back drop and an old bridge as focal points. And it’s one of my personal favourites!
- Eilean Donan Castle: Not strictly on The Isle of Skye this is probably our most requested location for a proposal, and it’s easy to see why. Permission has to be granted by the castle but they offer an exclusive package giving you sole access to the grounds before opening in request for a small fee. This gives you the perfect choice of castle locations without anyone to disturb you.
- Neist Point Lighthouse: For a proposal at sunset, Neist Point Lighthouse offers unparalleled views over the ocean, and it is quieter at the end of the day so you are less likely to have an audience!

Consider the Time of Year
The Isle of Skye’s weather can be unpredictable, so consider the time of year when planning your proposal. Spring and summer offer the best chance for clear skies and mild temperatures, making outdoor proposals more enjoyable. However, autumn and winter have their own charm, with fewer tourists and a more intimate atmosphere.
Plan the Timing
Sunrise and sunset are magical times on the Isle of Skye, providing soft, golden light that enhances the natural beauty of the landscape. Early morning proposals can be especially private, as you’ll likely have popular spots all to yourselves. The best thing about using a local photographer to record the moment for you is that we can advise you on what time of day is best!

Hire a Local Photographer
Capturing the moment on camera is a wonderful way to preserve the memory of your proposal, and the joy it brings! Hiring a local photographer like Rosie and me at Isle of Skye Proposals, who know the island well, can make a huge difference. We can help you choose the perfect location, time the proposal for the best light, and capture candid shots without intruding on the moment. We will even advise you which direction to face in and how best to go down on one knee!
Plan a Discreet Approach
If you want the proposal to be a surprise, plan a discreet approach. This could involve a casual hike or a scenic drive where you can spontaneously stop at the chosen spot. As your photographers, we will plan the proposal with you to make sure that it all goes to plan, and we can be in position to capture the moment, without being obvious!
Celebrate with a Local Experience
After the proposal, celebrate with a local experience. The Isle of Skye is known for its excellent seafood, whisky distilleries, and cozy pubs. Book a romantic dinner at a local restaurant or arrange a private tasting at one of the island’s distilleries to toast your engagement. You will need to book ahead during busy months – ask us and we can help you to decide where to go!
Relax and Enjoy the Moment
Finally, remember that the most important thing is your love and commitment to each other. Relax, take a deep breath, and enjoy the moment. The Isle of Skye’s natural beauty will do the rest, creating a magical setting for your proposal.
