Things That Might Not Go to Plan at Your Isle of Skye Wedding

In my experience as a wedding photographer in the Isle of Skye, weddings (and elopements!) are rarely 100% smooth sailing. Things don’t go to plan, people, weather, nature and life rarely follows rules, so there’s usually something that goes a bit wonky. When you throw the wild Isle of Skye into the mix, you get an extra dash of unpredictability. But that’s part of the magic! So here’s a look at a few things that might go off-script on your big day – and how those of us who work in weddings on the Isle of Skye take them in our stride and don’t let them bother us too much.

1. Your dream photo location is overrun with tourists.

You pictured standing alone on the edge of a cliff, windswept and romantic… but instead, you’re surrounded by three coachloads of people in bright waterproofs, with huge cameras, photobombing…

What to do? Don’t panic! I’ve been a photographer on Skye for years, and I know all the best spots, and the right times to visit. I’ll point you to the hidden gems, the quiet corners, and I know the clever angles that can make even the busiest spot look like you had it all to yourselves. Also: I’m not afraid to politely ask people to step aside for a shot – most are happy to shuffle aside for a few moments, and I’ll handle the awkward requests so you don’t have to get involved if you don’t want to. And if someone’s still lurking in the background? That’s what Photoshop is for!

2. The weather is doing… all the weather.

It was sunny this morning. Now it’s sleeting sideways. And in ten minutes, it’ll probably be misty, sunny again, and then raining frogs. On Skye, weather has its own rules!

What to do? Embrace it. Honestly, some of the most breathtaking photos happen in dramatic weather. Mist makes the image feel isolated and romantic. Wind can give you fantastic, cinematic moments! Rain on Skye is iconic – and we will embrace it. I come armed with umbrellas, extra blankets, and waterproof covers for my gear – and you’ll end up with photos of you loving the challenge, loving each other, and falling in love with Skye.

3. Your hair won’t stay put.

You spent hours curling your hair into perfection. Now the wind has other ideas.

What to do? Let it go!! Wild, windswept hair looks amazing in photos. It tells the story of your day, it moves, and it feels real. Plus, you’ll look like a Celtic goddess. I promise!

4. A sheep has decided to photobomb.

It won’t be the first time I’ve shared a wedding ceremony with local livestock or wildlife.

What to do? Roll with it! The sheep live here too. And honestly, having one wander through your ceremony just makes for even more Skye memories. You’ll laugh, your guests (if you have any) will laugh, and you’ll have a wonderful memory to tell the grandkids in many years to come!

5. You’re nervous about reading your vows in public.

Even if it’s just the two of you, speaking from the heart out loud can be a bit terrifying.

What to do? Take your time. Breathe. This is your moment. I’ll be there with a long lens so you won’t even notice me being there. Remember that these words are what you are saying to your spouse. Look into their eyes and speak from the heart, as if it’s just the two of you in the room. You don’t have to perform – just be you. That’s who your beloved is marrying!

6. Your shoes are wildly impractical.

They looked great in the shop, and you loved wearing them around the house, But now you’re hiking across heather in 5″ heels, and regretting your footwear choice more than a tiny bit.

What to do? Bring a backup pair of boots. Skye doesn’t mind what you’re wearing on your feet. Your partner won’t mind whether you’re wearing hiking boots or flip-flops! For my own wedding, I wore silver lace-up ankle boots!! And if you end up in your emergency shoes, I promise that, muddy wellies and a wedding dress look AWESOME.

7. The ceremony runs late because you stopped for photos with a Highland cow.

No regrets here. I’m right with you, with my camera in hand!!

What to do? Honestly, this one doesn’t need a solution – it’s an opportunity, not a problem! Take the photo. Hug the coo. I’ll be there with you.

The truth is, things will happen on your wedding day that you didn’t plan for – but that’s not unique to Skye weddings! It happens wherever you get married, and whatever the type of wedding you have. But that’s what makes your wedding story yours. Whether it’s the weather, local livestock, or a tourist or fifty, I’ll be there to capture the laughter, the love, and every beautiful imperfection in between.
