Eloping to the Isle of Skye is an adventure in itself. From strolling across a windswept beach, to next climbing a woodland trail under dramatic clouds. Packing for your elopement isn’t just about style when you’re coming to Skye. It’s about comfort, practicality, and being prepared for the island’s famous weather.

You need to pack smart – especially when you’re heading to a remote location for your ceremony. Under-packing can leave you cold, damp and miserable, while over-packing adds weight to carry and stress to manage it. This guide will walk you through what to pack, and what to leave behind. When you have the right things in your suitcase, you can focus on your day, your love, and the incredible island around you.

Layers – Staying Warm While Looking Great

Skye’s weather is unpredictable, so layering is a great idea. Bring clothes that can mix, match, and adapt throughout your day.

• Base layers: Breathable fabrics like merino or technical blends keep you warm and dry. Avoid cotton, which holds moisture.
• Mid-layers: Lightweight sweaters or fleeces for warmth without bulk.
• Outer layers: A waterproof, windproof jacket with a hood is essential. Look for one that’s breathable and packable.
• Trousers: Quick-dry or hiking trousers are ideal. If you want photos in a dress or kilt, pack something lightweight and easy to layer underneath.
• Ceremony outfit: Bring something comfortable but special—flowing dresses or tailored outfits that layer well. Flats or sturdy shoes for walking, plus a backup pair for photos.
• Accessories: Gloves, hats, and scarves can make a huge difference in colder months. Even in summer, windproof layers are wise.

However!! These don’t sound like wedding day outfits, right? You have dreamed of a floaty dress, blowing in the wind on a clifftop. Or a traditional kilt, with colours to complement the heather. Not walking trousers and a waterproof! But you can have that too… just make sure you have a waterproof to throw over your dress, or a hat and gloves to match the tartan!

Footwear – Comfort That Suits Your Adventure

Shoes! One of my favourite things!!

I love it when brides and grooms combine comfort with practicality and style. I’ve seen some really brilliant solutions that work for climbing up cliffs, running on a beach, and also looking great in the photos!

Even if your ceremony spot is flat, you’ll likely be walking over uneven terrain, muddy paths, and potentially slippery rocks to reach it. Therefore, sensible shoes are a must, even if you end up carrying your heels with you to change into!

• Sturdy shoes or boots: Waterproof hiking boots or trail shoes are perfect for accessing hidden elopement locations.
• Ceremony shoes: Bring flats, sandals, or low heels you can slip on for portraits if desired. Or have some fun! Brightly coloured Dr Marten boots, white trainers, even sparkly boots or shoes all add some fun to the outfit.
• Extras: Socks (including warm pairs), and wellies in case we get wet!

Accessories & Ceremony Essentials

Don’t forget the personal items that will make your day feel like… YOU.

• Rings! If you are exchanging rings as part of your ceremony, please don’t forget to bring them!
• A bouquet if you are having one. There are florists on Skye who can make you a beautiful bouquet, if you want to shop local, or if you’re travelling from overseas.
• Blankets or scarf for warmth during outdoor portraits. Choose a tartan to complement your outfits!
• An umbrella. Just in case of rain! Bring a transparent umbrella and it will look like a rain shower was part of your plan all along!

What to Leave Behind

Sometimes, what you leave out is as important as what you bring!

• Fragile or very valuable jewellery, especially if you’re planning an adventurous location for your elopement.
• Oversized bags – in case we have a bit of a walk to the perfect spot, leave your bags at home, or in the car.
• Anyone you don’t want to be there with you! If you’re eloping, it’s because you want to concentrate on just the two of you, and your life together. So leave behind all the people and embrace the love of your life!
