A Love Affair with Skye and a New Year Wedding
Karen and Vince traveled from Australia for their dream wedding. Karen’s family originated from Skye and they both had a hankering to visit, so decided to take the holiday of a lifetime and spend three months on the island. Both Karen and Vince have recently retired from full time work and have set up their own photography businesses. Before they settled into establishing their new roles they took some time out to explore. The love affair with Skye started as soon as they arrived at their cottage at the far north end of the island. It very nearly resulted in them buying a house and deciding to stay! Covid and family pressures stopped that plan in its tracks but they had a very special wedding and a dream holiday.
New Year’s Day is a special date for them and so I laid off the Hogmanay ceilidhs and opted for an early night. The weather was ‘dramatic’ but the smiles from everyone there brightened the day. I wish I could say that their friends who had travelled half way round the world to join them didn’t notice the cold. They did, but wore brave faces along with knee chilling kilts!
Davina conducted their ceremony at the cottage they called home. Hand fasting and drinking from the quaich nodded to their Scottish ancestry and they included a tradition from Australia of throwing money to promise prosperity and good fortune.
After they had exchanged vows and done all the paperwork we headed off to The Fairy Glen and onto Slighachan before they headed back to The Skeabost Hotel for dinner and a chance to thaw out a little.
