Small Weddings on the Isle of Skye

Why Small Weddings Work So Well On The Isle Of Skye
Not everyone wants to elope… And not everyone wants a big, full-scale traditional wedding either.
Somewhere in the middle, there’s a smaller option that tends to suit people far better than they expect.
A smaller wedding. A handful of people. A beautiful place.
A day that feels perfect for you, without the performance.
And on the Isle of Skye, small weddings work beautifully!

Not Too Big. Not Too Small. Just Right
A small wedding (or micro wedding, if you prefer the official term) usually means some of the following:
- just the two of you, plus a few of your favourite people
- a ceremony somewhere that actually means something
- time to enjoy the day, rather than manage it
- Time to spend with a few special people, instead of crowds of acquaintances.
It means you have everything that matters, and can let go of everything that doesn’t.
For some people, a small wedding is just the two of you with your children. I have a blog all about Eloping to Skye with the Kids!
No seating plans that feel like a puzzle.
No running from one part of the day to the next.
No wondering when you’ll get a moment to yourselves.
Just a day that feels calm, important… and very, very yours.

Why Skye Makes Small Weddings Easy
Skye isn’t known for “big production” weddings.
There aren’t rows of venues competing for attention, or spaces designed for hundreds of guests.
Instead, we have:
- open landscapes
- quiet castles
- places that don’t need much added to them
Which means a small wedding doesn’t feel like a compromise, it feels like the right choice.
You don’t need to create atmosphere when you are on Skye – it’s everywhere!

You Still Get the Wedding (Without the Overwhelm)
This is the part that people often worry about when they are planning a micro wedding… “Will it still feel like a wedding?”
Yes! It absolutely will. You still have:
- the moment you say your vows
- the people who matter most around you
- the sense that this is something important
What you leave out of your wedding day is:
- pressure
- doing things because it’s expected, instead of because you want to
- or a timeline that’s stressing you out
And that means you’re making the day ALL about you!

What the Day Actually Feels Like
Most small weddings on Skye don’t follow a strict timeline! They unfold in whatever way feels best for you.
You could decide to:
- get ready slowly, without rushing
- meet your guests somewhere beautiful
- have your ceremony with the landscape around you
- spend some time exploring afterwards
- Have a lovely meal together in a friendly restaurant or pub
I’ll usually spend around two hours with you, which is enough time for your ceremony and a couple of carefully chosen locations.
It’s just enough time to create something really meaningful, without photography taking over your whole day.

It Works Surprisingly Well for Guests, Too
If you’re travelling to Skye, especially from overseas, bringing a small group of your most important peoplemwith you can feel like part of the experience.
Your guests aren’t just attending a wedding, they can be with you in many other ways.
- exploring somewhere new
- having fun together before AND after your wedding
- part of something that feels a bit more personal than a traditional event
- spend real, quality time with your favourite people
And because the day itself is uncomplicated, you actually get to spend time with them, not just see them briefly between everything else.

You Don’t Need to Fill the Day
One of the big advantages of a smaller wedding is that you don’t need to plan every minute!
A micro-wedding on Skye gives you space and time to do what you want to on your wedding day.
Space to pause.
Time to take it in.
Flexibility to change plans if the weather shifts (which it probably will… this is Skye, after all).

A Slight Warning (In the Nicest Possible Way)
Once you start thinking about a smaller wedding, it can be quite hard to go back to the idea of a big one. Because who wants to swap a day with hundreds of people you don’t know very well, for a day with your favourite people?
You may realise that you don’t need the tradition, the lists of things to do and the relatives to keep happy. You might just decide that you want something more intimate, with the people you want around you, in a place that is truly wonderful.
You don’t actually need all the extra layers for it to feel important.

Thinking About a Small Wedding on Skye?
If you’re somewhere between “we don’t want a big wedding” and “we don’t quite want to elope either”, then a micro wedding might be exactly where you land.
And if you’re not quite sure yet, that’s completely OK too.
If you’d like some help shaping what your wedding day could look like, choosing locations, or working out what would suit you best, I’m always happy to chat things through.
