What Families Are Surprised By When They Visit the Isle of Skye
Are you planning a trip to the Isle of Skye with your family?
I meet a lot of families who are visiting from the USA, and there are a few things that might surprise you. Not in a bad way, but in a “this is very different from what we expected” kind of way.
Some of them are magical.
Some of them are slightly chaotic (especially with children involved).
And some of them become the stories you will laugh about when you get home!
For some families, the trip is more meaningful than a regular vacation and can be an elopement! Here’s my take on Eloping to the Isle of Skye with Kids

Planning your family trip to Skye? Here’s what often surprises people:
Kids experience it very differently to adults (and often better!)
The landscape is bigger and wilder than it looks in photos
The weather changes… a lot
Distances are short, but journeys take longer
It can be much quieter than most tourist destinations

The Landscape Feels Bigger Than You Expect
Photos don’t quite prepare you for the scale of Skye. Quite how big it is, or how small it can make you feel. You might have seen the mountains, the cliffs, the open spaces, but being in it is something else entirely.
For kids, this often means:
- They have space to run further than expected
- They can climb things they definitely shouldn’t (but probably will anyway)
- Asking if they can “just go over there” (they cannot… it’s a mile away 😄)
For parents, it usually means you enjoy watching your kids have their freedom! And lots of saying “wow, this is incredible”

The Weather Has a Mind of Its Own
This is probably the biggest surprise. On Skye, the weather is unlike anywhere else in the world.
You might check the forecast, and then watch it change to something completely different within an hour.
Sunshine, wind, mist, rain… sometimes all in one afternoon. Snow on the mountains and then sunscreen needed by the shore, in the same day.
But the thing most families don’t expect, is that the weather doesn’t ruin the experience, it adds to it!
Kids don’t mind a bit of wind or rain, and sometimes they prefer it. Some of the most memorable moments happen when you embrace what mother nature throws at you!
Wellies, puddles, windswept hair… it’s all part of the adventure.

It’s Not About the Plan
A lot of families arrive with a list of places they want to visit. Some even have an itinerary planned out.
And that’s great, but Skye has a habit of gently rearranging your plans. So it’s important to stay flexible!
By allowing for impulsive trips, you might:
- Stop somewhere unplanned because the light looks beautiful, and see the best view of your trip
- Spend longer in one place because the kids are happy exploring, and make memories that you will treasure forever
- Skip something entirely because you’ve found somewhere better, and that’s OK! You can see everything… next time!
By being fluid with your plans, you can work around the weather, the light, and the mood of the family!

Distances Are Short… But Take Longer Than You Think
On a map, everything looks quite close. And if you were a bird, flying between locations, that would be the case! But in reality,
- Roads are winding, and there could be a traffic jam caused by a herd of sheep in the road
- You’ll want to stop (a lot) to take a better look at the landscape
- “Just one more photo” happens more often than expected
Add children into the mix, and journeys become part of the day rather than something to rush through.
If you’re travelling with children, snacks help. And taking time to pack a picnic or a bag of nibbles will mean more time to explore!
Let Children Be Comfortable
It’s Quiet. Properly Quiet. Especially at night, early in the morning, and out of the main tourist season.
This one often surprises families the most. When you get away from the best-known spots, Skye can feel incredibly peaceful. You have space, quiet, and room to explore and breathe.
For some children, this is freedom that they will embrace! They will enjoy the simplicity of being outside, exploring, and having the best time.
Kids Don’t Care About the “Famous Spots”
You might be excited to visit somewhere you’ve seen online. Perhaps the photos you’ve seen of the Fairy Pools are something you want to capture yourself.
Your children are probably just as happy visiting the lesser-know spots.
- throwing stones in a river
- climbing over rocks
- chasing each other through the grass
And those are often the moments you’ll want to remember most. Not the instagram pictures, but the real emotion.

Photos Often Feel Easier Than You Expect
A lot of families arrive slightly nervous about having photos taken, especially when visiting somewhere new.
But when you choose a vacation photoshoot on the Isle of Skye, you will quickly discover that you have made the BEST choice for your family.
There’s no studio. No pressure to “pose, stand still and smile”. Instead, it becomes a fun walk, discovering nature as we go. It’s exploring the small streams, and yes – we might get wet! It’s spending time together and laughing about silly faces and fun memories. It’s letting everyone just be themself.
Thinking About a Family Photoshoot on Skye?
If you’re visiting the Isle of Skye and would love some relaxed, natural photos of your time here, it doesn’t need to be complicated.
Short sessions tend to work best for families. You have enough time to explore, have fun, and capture real moments without it feeling like a big event.
