What to Wear for Family Photos on the Isle of Skye

Planning a family photoshoot on the Isle of Skye is an exciting part of your vacation. The landscapes here are breathtaking. You get everything from dramatic mountains and wild moorland to waterfalls, beaches and rugged trails.

One of the most common questions families ask before their session is: “What should we wear?”

The good news is that you don’t need anything complicated or overly styled. The most important thing is choosing outfits that feel comfortable, look great, and are suited to Skye’s outdoor environment and unpredictable weather. Here are some tips to help your family look great while still enjoying the adventure.

Dress for the Skye Weather

The weather on Skye can change quickly, even in spring and summer. Layers are always a good idea, as they allow you to stay comfortable if the temperature shifts or the breeze picks up.

Light jackets, cosy knits, scarves or textured cardigans can all look lovely in photographs while also being practical.

Being comfortable makes a huge difference, especially for children.

And don’t forget to bring a spare change of clothes and a towel. You may get wet!!

Choose Colours That Work With the Landscape and the season

The Isle of Skye’s landscapes are full of beautiful natural colours, which change with the season. Many shades of green, earthy brown, soft greys and heather tones.

Clothing that complements these natural shades tends to photograph beautifully. Some colours that work particularly well include:

  • Soft blues
  • Creams and neutrals
  • Warm browns
  • Sage or olive green
  • Soft rust or muted reds

These tones blend well with the highland backdrop, and create a timeless look in your photographs.

Avoid Loud Patterns and Large Logos

While bold prints and large logos can look fun in everyday life, they aren’t great for a photo. They draw the attention – and we want these photographs to be about your faces, your expressions and you experience… not a big logo!

Plain clothes, very simple patterns or a textured fabric work much better than busy or bold patterns. I love cosy knits, linen, denim or soft cottons. These add interest to the image without drawing attention away from the family connections and expressions.

Keeping things fairly simple helps your photographs to feel relaxed and timeless.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Rather than everyone wearing identical outfits, aim for colours that work together as a group.

For example, one person might wear a soft blue jumper, another a cream cardigan, and someone else a navy jacket. These tones complement each other without looking too uniform.

The goal is for the family to look connected but still natural and individual.

Sensible Shoes Are a Good Idea

Family photoshoots on Skye often involve walks along rocky paths or grassy landscapes. Choosing practical footwear makes the experience much more enjoyable.

Boots, trainers or sturdy shoes are perfect. They also suit the outdoor feel of the island and look completely natural in photographs.

You may have seen from my photos that I sometimes get my families to splash in water… if this feels slike somthing that you would like to do, then be prepared to have bare feet, or bring your wellies!

Let Children Be Comfortable

Children are happiest in clothes they feel comfortable playing in.

Family photos on Skye are often relaxed and adventurous, with the whole family climbing rocks, exploring trails or splashing in a stream. Clothing that allows children to move freely helps them enjoy the experience and leads to more natural photographs.

A Photoshoot That Feels Like Part of Your Skye Adventure

Family sessions on the Isle of Skye are designed to be relaxed and enjoyable. Rather than posing for long periods, families simply explore the landscape together while I hang out with you, camera in hand.

Your clothing should reflect this vibe! Be comfortable enough for an adventure, but simple enough to let the beauty of your family and the island show through.

If you’re planning a visit to the Isle of Skye and would love to capture your adventure together, a family photoshoot is a wonderful way to preserve those memories.

Your vacation photoshoot will reflect the unique story of your time on the island.
