What I Think About While Photographing Families on Skye
A Peek Into The Mind of an isle of skye photographer
Have you ever wondered what’s going on in my head, when I’m photographing families on the Isle of Skye? I’m not just clicking away while marvelling at the scenery – there’s actually a lot going on as I plan and perfect and problem solve. Every family photoshoot in Skye is a mixture of forward-planning, following my instinct, and embracing the unexpected. Here’s a little peek behind the scenes at what really runs through my mind as a Skye family photographer.

1. Keeping the landscape as the backdrop, and not the main character
Skye isn’t short on beautiful views! There are towering cliffs, moody, changing skies, craggy beaches. The real trick I have to manage is making sure your family doesn’t disappear into the gorgeous landscape! I’m constantly thinking about scale: do I want you to look tiny on a clifftop, or should the focus be on your toddler’s cheeky grin with just a hint of sea behind you?
It’s a balancing act! The landscape sets the scene and reminds you of your visit, but you’re always the stars of the show. That’s the beauty of family vacation photography on the Isle of Skye: it combines dramatic backdrops with family fun.

2. Working with your children’s personalities
Some kids don’t stand still. Ever! And that’s brilliant. I’d much rather capture their real personalities than force everyone into a stiff line-up, if that’s not what works for your clan. So whether you’re throwing stones into a river, or chasing each other across a field, I’m looking at how the lines of the hills frame you, how the light hits your hair, and whether I need to leg it three feet to the left before the moment disappears.
Sometimes I’m crouching in the mud. Sometimes I’m lying flat on my belly. All part of the job of a Skye family photographer!

3. The Beauty of real Moments
The photos you’ll love most probably won’t be the “perfect” ones. It’ll be the windswept hug, the laugh when someone falls over in the sand, or the squishy toddler kiss that left half their snack on your cheek.
Skye has a way of stripping back the polish and making space for the real stuff. Whether that’s messy hair, muddy boots, or running in the surf. The genuine moments are why family vacation photography on the Isle of Skye is so special.

4. I worry about my cameras…
I know this is not what you expected me to be thinking about! But as your family photographer, I often scramble across cliffs, balance on rocks and stand, sit and even lie in the surf! My cameras don’t like being bounced on rocks. Or dunked in the sea… so I do sometimes worry about them! But then I get caught up in the moment, and do what it takes to capture your perfect expression.
And yes, I’ve damaged a few cameras along the way. It was totally worth it for the shot though!
5. Weather, Light & Timing
Let’s be honest: the weather here does what it likes, when it likes! Sunshine, sideways rain, sleet followed by slapping on sunscreen. Four seasons in a single hour is not unheard of here! While you’re wondering if your hairstyle is going to survive the breeze, I’m thinking about light. Where’s it coming from? How can I use it? Do I need to shuffle us around to avoid you squinting too much?
If the rain comes, I’ll ask if you’re up for embracing it (because wet hair can look amazing). If not, I’ve always got a backup plan. The weather is part of Skye’s charm, and part of why you are here! Sometimes those moody skies make for the most dramatic, unforgettable family photos.

6. What I Want YOU to Think
Whatever the weather, you’re going to get beautiful images from your Isle of Skye family photoshoot. But I also want you to enjoy the experience. I want you to feel relaxed, connected, and like you’ve had a proper adventure together.
When you look back at your photographs, I don’t want you just to see “that time we had some photos taken.” I want you to remember how it felt to run into the wind, laugh at the rain, and just be yourselves in one of the most magical places in the world. I live and work on the Isle of Skye because I love it more than anywhere else. I want you to feel and embrace that love for this wonderful island!

If you’re dreaming of capturing your own Skye adventure, I’d love to be your photographer. Whether it’s a once in a lifetime holiday, or simply a chance to freeze this stage of your family life, a family photoshoot on the Isle of Skye is the perfect way to create memories you’ll treasure forever.

7. Chill Out Under the Stars
The island offers countless secluded spots where you can wrap up in a blanket, take a flask of hot cocoa, and enjoy the tranquility of Skye’s wilderness. On clear nights, the lack of light pollution means the stars are clear and absolutely breathtaking.
