Sligachan Bridge is perfect for a wedding.
Sligachan Bridge is an iconic location on the Isle of Skye. It sits on the main road that runs through the island and so everyone passes it when travelling north to south. The old road bridge sits over the river alongside the new one. It makes a fabulous foreground feature for landscape photographers. The river ranges from a gentle trickle to a raging torrent over the rocks and the view of the Cuillin behind is second to none. The sun sets onto the mountains and so the colours in the evening can be incredible. As it sits right on the road you don’t have to be super fit to see it all, in fact anyone can take advantage of the view. Best of all the Sligachan Hotel is right there too for a bite to eat or a wee dram at the bar.
Ann and John decided to hold their ceremony there as it is right on their doorstep. The bridge also makes it a great location for those who want to dress up a little and wear some cool shoes, and this wedding party did not disappoint! Thankfully, although cold in December, the wind stayed away and everyone was happy to be outside.
It’s all sounding idyllic, until you hear what actually happened! John, was taken ill in the early hours of the morning and was only let out of hospital after begging to be allowed to get to his wedding, and agreeing to the timings being out back a little. If this wasn’t stressful enough, one of the bridesmaids had a call to say that her child was poorly and had to leave before the ceremony and Ann had a serious dress malfunction when she came to get into it. That was the dreaded three, thankfully, and although over an hour late, they managed to marry before it became completely dark!
Sometimes a bit of disaster can make you see what is really important. No-one cared that Ann’s dress had a few safety pins as added decoration, they were so glad that John was ok, and had made it there (he said there was no way he was not going to make it, even if he had to go back to hospital straight afterwards!) and is was clear that this wedding was all above love, not the frills. Just as it should be.
Their photos are pretty dark, it was dark! The sun sets early on Skye in November, but thankfully we were able to drain the last dregs of the light and the dramatic clouds turned a beautiful dark purple for us to end an exceptional day. John felt better and managed to stay on for the reception at The Sligachan Hotel.
