If Your Kids Planned Your Family Photo Day on the Isle of Skye…

Planning a trip to the Isle of Skye with children?

You might have a lovely idea in your head of what your vacation to the Isle of Skye will look like. You’ve seen it on insta, you’ve read the travel guides online, and you think you know what you want to do.

You have pictured beautiful views, peaceful moments. Maybe even a calm, relaxed family photoshoot where everyone looks in the same direction at the same time, with the Cuilin Mountains as the backdrop.

And then… there are the children. And when you are travelling as a family, the smallest person in the group tends to be the boss!

What if you let them be in charge?! What would your day look like if your kids planned it? And would it end up being your best adventure?!

Stop 1: Somewhere with Puddles (Not the View You Picked)

You might be thinking about dramatic landscapes and wild mountains. Wide open views. That perfect spot you’ve seen online.

Your children? They’ve found a puddle… And not just any puddle—the best puddle. The one that absolutely has to be jumped in at least five times before anything else can happen. It’s the most important thing for them right now… it’s where they want to be.

As a family photographer on the Isle of Skye, I know that this is often where the best photos start.

Not when everyone is standing still, but when they’re moving, giggling, and a little bit muddy.

Stop 2: Snacks (Even If You Just Ate)

You’ve barely got into the car, and someone is already hungry. It doesn’t matter that you’ve just had breakfast. Or that you stopped five minutes ago.

Snacks are always the most important part of the day, when you have young children! But don’t dismiss the power of the snack… they can be quite useful!

A quick snack break can reset everything. Energy comes back. Smiles return. The day carries on.

Stop 3: Climbing Something They Probably Shouldn’t

The Isle of Skye is full of things that children feel the need to climb! Rocks. Hills. Fences… Anything with even the slightest incline.

While you might be focusing on the view, the kids are focused on whether they can get to the top of whatever is in front of them.

When I’m with you as your photographer, I’ll encourage it! It’s when the small humans are having a great time that things start to feel less like a “photoshoot” and more like an adventure.

Stop 4: “I Don’t Want My Photo Taken”

At some point, it will happen. One of the angels will decide they are absolutely not interested in having their photo taken. There might be foot stamping, there might be a pouty lip! But don’t worry! This is usually short-lived. I’m an expert at distraction and redirection. So very quickly, they will relax, they will move and they will remember they are having fun.

Stop 5: Running (In the Opposite Direction)

We’ve just found a beautiful spot for the family portrait, and everyone is ready. But, someone runs. Fully in the opposite direction, as fast as possible.

Don’t let this frustrate you – sometimes these are the best photos! Movement, energy and personality are the things you can’t really plan, and don’t need to.

So… What Does This Mean for Family Photos on Skye?

It means your day doesn’t need to look perfect to feel right. In my experience, family photos are best when everything is a little bit like organised chaos!

Family photos on the Isle of Skye aren’t about standing still, perfectly posed smiles or everything going to plan.

What’s important is movement, connection, and letting your children be themselves
