Letter To The Planner of Taylor Swift’s Wedding…

Dear Celebrity wedding planners… You’re Eloping Wrong (And Here’s Why Skye Would Be Better)!

There seems to be a bit of a trend at the moment among celebrities… A quiet ceremony somewhere tasteful (usually a Registry Office in London, Paris or somewhere equally polished)… followed by a much bigger, much more photographed celebration somewhere else.

Italy is popular, where whole venues, and on occasion entire cities, are taken over by a celebrity couple, hundreds of their closest friends, and the world’s press clamouring for the first shot.

And while it all looks very beautiful… it does start to feel a little bit familiar. A competition to see who can out-do the last one. So, this is a suggestion for celebs, wedding planners and for couples, everywhere!

If you’re going to elope… why not actually elope? And choose the best place in the world to do it!

If you’re starting to wonder what an elopement here actually looks like, this guide to how to elope on the Isle of Skye is a good place to start.

Skye Doesn’t Really Do “High Profile”

This is probably the first thing to explain… Here on the Isle of Skye, we are grounded.

There are no velvet ropes.
No crowds gathering outside.
No-one waiting to see who arrives next.

You can stand on a cliff, say your vows, and the only witnesses are the wind, the sea… and possibly a sheep in the distance.

On Skye, we don’t try too hard to be exclusive. We do it, naturally.

You Can’t Really “Stage” Skye

You can plan. You can prepare. You can have a rough idea of how you’d like things to go. But you can’t dictate the colours, the flowers, or even whether the local animals will show up. The landscape will do as it will, with righ colours, year round.

The light changes. The weather shifts. The wind does whatever it feels like.

And oddly, that’s exactly what makes it work. And Taylor and Travis, if you want something exclusive, unique, and raw… you should stop thinking about New York City as your destination wedding, and turn your gaze to Skye instead!

Here, it feels a lot more like what an elopement is supposed to be.

Privacy Actually Means Privacy

Even if you have the money of Jeff Bezos and can rent a whole city, in more well-known destinations, “private” often still means “discreetly public”, or “can be roped off”.

On Skye, private can mean… completely alone. Just you, your celebrant, and the mountains beyond.

In some spots on Skye, you might not see another person for hours. There are so many places on Skye where you can find that kind of space. Some are well-known, others much more hidden. Check out my guide to locations on Skye for pointers!

There’s space to breathe. Space to think. Space to actually experience what you’re doing, rather than performing for the crowds. And when you are in the public eye all the time, this may be the perfect change that you need.

It’s Not About the Guest List

When you choose to get married on the Isle of Skye, you will find that your focus changes.

You are no longer catering for a big guest list. When you’re a mega-star who plays to a huge audience every day, this will be a welcome relief. On Skye, there’s no pressure to turn it into an event.

Your wedding can become something much simpler, and more meaningful. It’s just the two of you, in a place that feels completely different from your everyday life.

(And if you do want a bigger celebration afterwards… that still works too. I’ve heard Madison Square Gardens will host the party for hundreds… Skye doesn’t want the extra traffic on the roads!!)

It’s Beautiful Without Trying Too Hard

There’s no need for elaborate styling or over-the-top details. In fact, your celebrity wedding planner will find it VERY easy to arrange, compared to a whole weekend long party in Palermo (Dua Lipa… I’m talking to you!)

The landscape does most of the work. We have cliffs, mountains, open skies, changing light, and it’s all already here, waiting for you.

You don’t need to add much. Just the two of you. And your hopes for your future together.

Which is quite refreshing, really.

Also… It’s Not Italy

This is not a criticism. Italy is stunning, and it’s chosen by high-profile couples for very good reasons.

But if everyone is choosing the same handful of destinations, it does start to lose that feeling of doing something a little bit different.

Skye isn’t trying to compete with an Italian city. It just offers something else entirely.

Most elopements here are much simpler than people expect, often just a couple of hours, a ceremony, and time to explore. Check out my example timeline of a Skye wedding to see what I mean

A Small Reality Check

Of course, the chances of a high-profile celebrity choosing the Isle of Skye for their elopement are… fairly slim. Which is probably part of the appeal!

Because what Skye offers isn’t about visibility, or spectacle, or making headlines. It’s about something quieter. It’s personal, and real.

to Everyone who isn’t a celebrity couple

If you’re reading this and thinking “that actually sounds exactly like what we want” (minus the paparazzi and security!)

Then you’re probably much closer to a Skye elopement than you think.
