What to Bring for a Family Photoshoot on Skye
Clothes, Props and Backup Plans
Family photoshoots on the Isle of Skye are among my favourite. Combining family fun with sweeping landscapes, wild skies, and moments that make your heart skip. But I’ll be honest… Skye’s weather can be changeable, kids can be unpredictable, and no one wants to spend a photoshoot worrying about what they forgot to pack.
As a Skye family photographer, I see it all. Here’s my guide on what to bring (and what to leave at home) so your family photoshoot in Skye is relaxed, fun, and full of gorgeous photos.

1. Clothing: Comfort and Style
Your outfits can make a huge difference in how your photos turn out. If you’re visiting Skye from overseas, I can help you to choose outfits that will work for your photoshoot but not take up too much space in your luggage! Here are my top tips:
- Bring an extra outfits for the kids. Snacks, sand, and puddles can happen! A spare outfit can save a meltdown!
- Layers are your friend. It can be chilly, windy, or rainy, even in summer. Cardigans, fleeces, scarves, and jackets work well, but can be taken off if the sun comes out!
- Coordinate, don’t match – pick a palette of 2–3 colours that complement each other. Soft neutrals, earthy tones, or pops of jewel colours work beautifully against Skye’s landscapes.
- Practical shoes – wellies, hiking boots, or trainers. You’ll likely be walking on uneven ground, muddy paths, or sandy beaches. Leave the heels at home this time!

2. Props & Personal Touches
Props can add personality and fun to your photoshoot — but less is more. Some ideas:
- Picnic items – a little picnic setup can make for relaxed moments in your family photos.
- Blankets or throws – perfect for sitting on grassy hills or beaches, plus they add a splash of colour and texture.
- Favourite toys or comfort items – small toys can help toddlers settle, and you can incorporate them into playful shots.
- Bubbles or balloons – fun, movement, and smiles guaranteed.

3. Backup Plans & Essentials
Skye’s weather has a mind of its own, so a bit of preparation goes a long way:
- Phone or camera in case you want to snap a few fun behind-the-scenes moments yourself.
- Raincoats and umbrellas – sometimes the rain adds a magical touch, sometimes it’s a full-on downpour. Be ready for both.
- Snacks and water – keeps energy high, moods calm, and kids happy.
- Spare clothes and towels – for puddle jumps, muddy boots, and unexpected wind gusts.

4. How I Help Make It Stress-Free

Bring the essentials, and I’ll handle the rest! From scouting hidden locations to capturing those raw, joyful moments that make family vacation photography on the Isle of Skye so special.
