What to Wear for Your Wedding on the Isle of Skye
Getting married on the Isle of Skye isn’t like any other place on Earth, and if you’ve chosen to get married on the Isle of Skye then your wedding won’t be like any other wedding either! It’s an adventure. Our weather is often unpredictable – one minute, the sun will be shining across the hills, and the next, a moody mist rolls in, giving the island a wild and romantic feel. The weather, the terrain and traditions can all help you to decide what to wear for your wedding on Skye.
When it comes to deciding what to wear for your Skye wedding, the only rule is this: wear whatever makes you happy. Whether it’s a traditional gown or a suit, or something completely unexpected, this is your day. Let’s do it your way. There are a few things to keep in mind that can help you feel comfortable while you’re saying “I do” in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
1. Wear Tartan
If you want to have something that embraces the Scottish wedding theme, then you should include some tartan in your wedding. Kilts are the classic choice, but you don’t have to stop there. A tartan sash draped over your shoulder, a tartan shawl to keep warm, or even a little tartan ribbon tied around your bouquet can add that perfect nod to Scottish heritage. Plus, it looks gorgeous in photos.
2. Dress for All Four Seasons in One Day
Skye’s weather does whatever it feels like – it’s part of the adventure of getting married on Skye! It’s a good idea to embrace layers. A woollen shawl, a fur bolero jacket, or even a cape will keep you cosy when the wind picks up. And there’s something magical about snuggling up in warm layers while standing on a cliff overlooking the sea.

Skye is all about adventure, and as you’ll probably see from my photographs of weddings on Skye, I love to include a little bit of adventure off the beaten track in my portraits. I love windswept cliffs, crashing waves on beaches, and even a short hike into the heathers! For that, you’ll need shoes that can keep up.
You don’t have to sacrifice style. Chunky boots, embellished trainers, or even sparkly wellies can work with a wedding dress or suit. The key is to pick something comfy and sturdy enough to handle Skye’s wild terrain. If you really want some killer heels for photos, or the ceremony, bring them along and you can pop them on for the important moments!
4. Flowers That Feel Like Skye
Skye’s landscapes are wild and natural, so why not let your bouquet reflect that? All the florists on Skye offer locally sourced flowers, and including them in your bouquet is a beautiful way to tie your wedding into the island itself.
Buttonholes and hairpieces are another way to include local flowers in your wedding. Even if it’s just the two of you eloping! Supporting local florists means you’re getting something completely unique, grown in the same place where you’re saying your vows.
5. Be Yourself—That’s What Matters Most
At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and like you. Whether you’re rocking a full tartan kilt, a brightly coloured dress, or something totally different that I haven’t thought of yet – Skye doesn’t care. It’s the kind of place that makes every wedding feel epic, no matter what you’re wearing.
Your might splash in the sea, the wind might tangle your hair, and the rain might show up just when you least expect it. But those moments will probably end up being your favourite memories. Because a Skye wedding isn’t about perfection – it’s about love and adventure, and the kind of beauty that can’t be tamed.
