Trends in Wedding Photography in 2026

Here are the biggest wedding photography trends I’m already seeing for 2026 – many of which feel perfect for the Isle of Skye.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned photographing weddings on the Isle of Skye, it’s that every love story is different. And the most beautiful weddings I’ve been to have all been perfect because they were exactly what the couple wanted, and what suited them.
Couples in 2026 are embracing celebrations that feel personal, and joyfully different.
The coming year’s trends are all about intimacy, adventure, colour, and creating a wedding day that feels like YOU. Whether that means saying your vows on a cliff top at sunrise, wearing a dress covered in embroidered wildflowers, or having your dog as your ring-bearer, I’m here to photograph the very best of every second of it.

1. Getting Married on Skye — Romance Meets Adventure
Skye remains the undisputed star of destination weddings. It’s a trend that gets bigger every single year.
The dramatic landscapes, the moody skies, the endless sense of space here on Skye means it’s made for lovers who want something real and absolutely breathtaking.
Couples are choosing to escape the overwhelm of big weddings and instead focus on a ceremony filled with connection.
With my local knowledge, I’ll help you find a spot that looks like a movie scene and feels wonderfully private. The perfect place for you to exchange your vows and celebrate your love.

2. Colourful & Patterned Wedding Dresses
I’m seeing dresses in rich deep hues, floral embroidery, traditional tartan… and they look unbelievable against Skye’s moody backgrounds.
A swish of colour on a wild cliff? Yes please!
Wear what makes you feel beautiful. Let the dress tell the world who you are.
3. Bring Your Dog!
As a dog lover, I support this trend with my whole heart!
Dogs are family, and couples in 2026 are proudly bringing their pups to their ceremony on Skye, whether it’s an elopement or a tiny wedding.
Bringing your furry child to your wedding will add fun, mischief, wags, and sometimes a few hilarious moments. I always come armed with treats and patience… because dogs do have a habit of stealing the spotlight!
If your dog loves an adventure, Skye is the perfect place for them to celebrate with you.

4. Small Ceremony Now… Big Party Later
More and more couples are having a quiet, intimate ceremony on Skye, and then celebrating with family and friends back home later.
It’s romantic, relaxed, and completely takes the pressure off you on the day.
When you’re not rushing to keep hundreds of guests entertained, you get to focus on each other.
Just the two of you (plus me quietly third-wheeling with a camera), enjoying every moment.
5. A Non-Legal Ceremony in Your Dream Location
Sometimes the place you feel drawn to isn’t one where you can legally marry, or perhaps the legal paperwork to get married here on Skye feels daunting, when all you want to do is enjoy the day.
Many couples are sign the paperwork at home, then travel to Skye for the ceremony that feels like the real deal.
No rules. No restrictions. Just freedom to choose the exact spot that speaks to your hearts, without the pressure to tick boxes or fill out forms.
6. Meaningful Scottish Traditions
2026 is seeing couples embrace traditions that feel symbolic and reflect Scottish heritage.
Handfasting is becoming hugely popular, and it looks incredibly beautiful in photos as the two of you physically tie your lives together.
Bagpipes have always been present her on Skye. I love it when a remote Isle of Skye wedding is accompanied by bagpipes – it gives me goosebumps. Every time.

7. Hidden, Off-the-Beaten-Path Locations
Skye is full of iconic spots, and if you look through my website you’ll see the same famous locations appear in lots of different weddings. For me, the real magic is in the secret corners, the unexplored places.
Couples are seeking out quiet, tucked-away places away from the busy tourist routes. Places where you can say your vows without a crowd of strangers watching. Places where the only sounds are wind, water, and your celebrant concentrating on your union.
With my years on the island, I know all the best hidden gems — and I love matching each couple with a location that fits their vibe.

8. Low-Impact, Eco-Conscious Weddings
Couples are choosing celebrations that are gentle on the landscape they love so much, and this is a trend I hope is here to stay!
- dried or seasonal bouquets
- small guest lists, or elopements without any friends or family present.
- reusable outfits and trimmings, so you aren’t buying anything that’s single use.
- leave-no-trace ceremonies – leaving the location exactly as we found it.
- locally made touches so you aren’t bringing in lots of products from elsewhere. Reducing transport cost and supporting the local economy.
It’s a beautiful trend — one that keeps Skye wild and wonderful for everyone.
2026: The Year of Personality-Led Weddings on Skye
While elsewhere in the world, couples are copying trends and weddings are following a formula, here on Skye, weddings are becoming more personal and more emotional. For the more adventurous and unique couples, Skye offers the perfect place to make your wedding all about you. I can’t wait to photograph each and every one. .
